There was no doubt that after a shellacking at the hands of their division rival Calgary Flames, the Canucks were going to show up with a workmanlike effort Saturday against the Minnesota Wild.
We’ve learned of an Alain Vigneault that after an egg has been laid, coach V wouldn’t let it happen again. At least not in the next game. Vancouver came out with a full sixty minutes, something that its players – to a man – had said they hadn’t put forth to that point in the season.
That’s the positive. Vancouver improved on what they had been offering up in games past.
Problem is it was the Minnesota Wild.
The danger in the amount of praise the Canucks received for a win against the lowly, last place Wild is that it would instill a false sense of achievement heading into games against more capable opponents.
This was on display Monday night in Edmonton.
The Canucks undoubtedly put up another full sixty on Monday and may have even improved on their effort against the Wild on Saturday, but it proved not to be enough against an Oilers team that is off to a good start this season.
Effort is no longer the issue for the Canucks. It may be skill as Vancouver is missing two of their top six forwards (Daniel Sedin and Pavol Demitra) and arguably their top d-man, Sami Salo. But the larger issue was execution.
Mason Raymond leaving Patrick O’Sullivan open in the slot on the Oilers first goal, or four Canucks leaving Sam Gagner open in front of then net on the second – and game winning – goal are prime examples.
Errors are hurting the Canucks every time they are made – maybe because their skill is lacking so there is no safety net – and so if Vancouver can’t cut down on its errors, it doesn’t matter how hard the team is working and for how long, because a lack of execution is going to trump any of that.
